Driving Requirements

Pursuant to Vehicle Code section 21650, a driver is required to drive upon the right side of the road unless a valid exception applies. For example, if the driver is making a left turn, when road closed, a one-way street, and when passing a vehicle impeding traffic. If a driver is attempting to pass a vehicle, they must be sure the left side is clearly visible and free from oncoming traffic in order to proceed safely. (Veh.C.21751) Passing a vehicle is valid under the following circumstances. For example, when the vehicle is about to make a left turn, or to pass upon a one-way street.

The right of way guidelines are illustrated under section 21800. If a driver a driver is on the left side of the highway, they should yield the right of way to the driver that on their immediate right. However, if the driver is attempting to make a left turn or a u-turn , they should yield to all drivers approaching the opposite way. Additionally, according to stop signs, a driver is to yield to anyone approaching the intersection.

When emergency vehicles approach a highway, a driver is to immediately yield the right of way and drive to right edge or curb of the highway and remain stopped until the emergency vehicle passes. (Veh.C. 21806). However, the driver of an emergency vehicle is still required to drive with care and diligence. If the emergency vehicle is on a freeway, a driver is to move to a lane farther from the vehicle with due care since the conditions are more dangerous than a highway. If a driver does not comply with restrictions, a $50.00 fee may be imposed.
