15 Passenger Vans: High Rollover Risk

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) issued a warning to users of 15-passenger vans. The report indicated that there are increased rollover risks under certain conditions.

The 15-passenger van becomes substantially more unstable than SUVs or pickup trucks when filled with passengers or driven above 50 miles per hour. The 15-passenger van is five times more likely to roll over when filled than when only the driver is in the vehicle. When the van is filled with passengers or any load is placed on the roof the center of gravity shifts. When the van faces an accident or an emergency situation it becomes less resistant to rolling over. According to the NHTSA eighty percent of those who died in 15-passenger van rollovers nationwide in the year 2000 were not wearing their seatbelts.
